Hudson Baylor Opens New Recycling Education Center in Phoenix

September 20, 2009

Hudson Baylor held a Grand Opening for its new Recycling Education Center on September 16th, 2009. The event was held at the Hudson Baylor West Materials Recovery Facility at 1919 E. University Avenue in Phoenix.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman were on hand to commission the new recycling resource for the Valley.

The Education Center is designed to increase awareness of how single stream recycling works by exploring what and how Valley residents currently recycle and what happens to the materials once they leave the curb.

The intent of the Education Center is to drive higher recycling participation throughout the Valley. Hudson Baylor’s efforts will complement and enhance the existing education and outreach efforts already in place in most Phoenix-area communities.  “We have worked with a number of Valley communities over the past ten years to help build successful and sustainable recycling programs, and we believe this is a natural progression for us to extend our service to our customers” says Scott Tenney, President of Hudson Baylor.  The Education Center is designed to accommodate school groups as well as other community organizations interested in learning more about what becomes of the materials put in the recycling bin, and how they are ultimately reused.

The Hudson Baylor West Materials Recovery Facility or “MRF” was the first single-stream recycling facility built in the greater Phoenix area, and currently serves the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Avondale.  Hudson Baylor operates two other MRFs in the Valley, and provides recycling processing services to the cities of Scottsdale, Mesa, and Peoria, and the Town of Gilbert.

The Education Center incorporates a number of hands-on exhibits that identify recyclable materials, how they are collected and processed, and what they can become as they are remanufactured into new products. Hosted by a recycled robot named “Murph”, visitors, especially kids, are introduced to exhibits which include games, interactive displays, and a short film that lays out the “cradle-to-cradle” philosophy that outlines a successful recycling program.

Hudson Baylor developed the education center as a component of its mission to drive increased recycling efforts and decrease the flow of reusable materials which currently end up in landfills. The significant investment in the Education Center by Hudson Baylor demonstrates our commitment to give back to the communities that have been critical to the Company’s success.  We received support from the following sponsors: the Cities of Phoenix and Avondale, Maricopa County, the Arizona Recycling Coalition, CMS Morrell, Right-a-Way Disposal and Sierra Plastics, In a time of increased budget pressure for all of its municipal customers, Hudson Baylor is proud to launch this education initiative in order to raise the profile of recycling in the Valley.
