Beacon Recycling Facility Set To Open
Thursday, December 1, 2011

Dave Lucas, Hudson Valley Bureau Chief
BEACON, NY (WAMC) - A new waste management plant in Beacon will make it easier for
residents and businesses in Dutchess County to recycle some of their garbage. Hudson
Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports:
The 56,000-square foot Hudson-Baylor plant is outfitted to separate and process a variety of
materials, including household materials and office waste: glass, metals, plastic and paper
products. Hudson-Baylor Director of Marketing Chris Coady says the facility can handle
material at the rate of 20 tons per hour. Glass will be pulverized into a fine powder --- the other
materials will be compacted into up to 2-thousand pound bales. Coady notes that when the $17-
million dollar recycling facility goes operational in January - haulers will be paid between 30 and
35 dollars a ton for recyclables.
Charles North is the President and CEO of the Ducthess County Regional Chamber of
Commerce - he says recycling not only helps the environment, but creates more jobs. Dutchess
County Executive Bill Steinhaus and County Executive-elect Marc Molinaro toured the facility
Wednesday. Dutchess County's Industrial Development Agency helped finance the project -
Hudson Baylor has already contracted with haulers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and
Vermont.
